THE ROLE
JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
- To assist the NMA Management Team in the successful realisation of the Board's vision, mission and plans for the NMA in delivering an Academy that meets expectations and aspirations for a leading world-class learning and teaching environment
- To lead and implement the associated policies and procedures within the NMA
- To lead the development and implementation of the NMA's commercial strategies in line with the NMA strategic priorities
- To lead and operationally manage the development of curriculum team groupings to promote an industry focused tertiary educational model
- To lead and inspire staff to be creative and innovative in all aspects of pedagogy and to embed Blended Learning across all curriculum areas
- To lead operational planning and delivery of the NMA's curriculum provision targets
- To ensure all courses within the area of responsibility have the awarding body approvals
- To lead the development of a QMS that meets the needs of the Industry, NMA and the awarding bodies
- Ensure performance targets (i.e. student early retention, retention, and achievement, student satisfaction) exceed NMA's benchmarks
- To lead, manage and provide direction to a team in order to provide a valuable student experience
- To work with the NMA Management Team in achieving the NMA's vision of excellence through the development and implementation of the NMA Strategic Plans, mission, vision, values and behaviours
- To lead in the development of a PMS for all teaching and learning equipment within the area of responsibility
- To be responsible and accountable for financial control of budgets within the curriculum area and partnership ventures to ensure these do not fall outside agreed parameters
- To develop a high performing team providing inspirational and exemplary leadership and strategic direction, ensuring all annual performance and development reviews are completed
- To identify opportunities for the strategic development of new courses and contribute to the development of such ideas
- To ensure teaching content and methods of delivery are in accordance with equal opportunities, are compliant with NMA's standards and are fully accessible
- To be a champion of change, communication, continuous improvement and empowerment, securing motivation, loyalty and the support of direct reports in particular and staff in general
- To ensure regular team meetings with all direct reports
- Ensure direct reports receive regular feedback on their performance
- To be responsible for staff temporary hours, ensuring full utilisation of permanent staff within academic areas
- Ensure direct reports receive regular feedback on their performance
- To co-ordinate and manage the planning and delivery of the Student Experience to ensure it is of the highest standard, including, in particular:
- Ensuring that the performance targets for the improvement in the quality of learning and teaching, student satisfaction and attainment for the area of responsibility are achieved
- Coordinating and managing the deployment of faculty resources using resource management tools; staffing, materials, rooming etc. Ensuring that admissions policy and processes are managed rigorously and fairly and within agreed levels of activity
- Managing the student complaints, disciplinary process and conduct across the faculty areas.
- Undertake the roles of Investigation Officer or Chair for staff discipline and grievance allegations
RECRUITMENT SPECIFICATION
The post holder must:
- A Class 1 Master Mariner or Chief Engineer or a relevant degree
- Significant relevant experience of operational management in curriculum delivery including effective development, deployment and leadership of staff
- Significant leadership experience at middle management level in further or higher education
- Significant experience in the planning, development, approval and the delivery of Nautical Science and Marine Engineering core curriculum and the underpinning knowledge as per the STCW
- Significant experience in the planning, development, approval and the delivery of STCW short courses
- An ability to build effective and financially beneficial working relationships with industry to drive and deliver dynamic, creative and innovative learning
- Ability to develop positive working relationships with individuals and customers at all levels (internal and external)
- Highly developed communication, liaison and networking skills
- The ability to analyse, solve problems and implement change with a successful track record of managing and delivering change
- A strong sense of purpose and proven experience of exceeding agreed goals and KPIs
- The ability to manage budgets and meet financial targets; Excellent ICT Skills; ability to provide management level reportage
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and effectively
- Ability to manage conflicting priorities and meet deadlines to the satisfaction of all parties
- The ability to delegate effectively and manage the performance of others
- The ability to lead others through inspirational leadership which commands respect and provides an environment where others feel motivated
